“Back o’ Bourke” is an Australian expression which means any place which is remote or inconvenient.
Based on the outback town of Bourke, NSW, it is a town with a rich and diverse heritage. Bourke is located on the Darling River, 760 km north-west of Sydney and 133 km south of the Queensland - New South Wales border and is considered the gateway to the Outback, lying on the edge of the desert and servicing the surrounding large pastoral properties. In 1835, settlement of the area began, and Bourke was surveyed for a town in 1869. As Henry Lawson wrote: "If you know Bourke, then you know Australia."
